How do framers measure a picture frame size?

In the framing world, the size of a frame always refers to the glass or internal opening, never the outer edge of the wood. There are two ways to specify your size: Method 1, Art Only, where you give the exact width and height of your art (or the outer edge of an existing mount) and the overall frame size is calculated for you; and Method 2, Mount or Mat Board, where you give the width and height of your artwork and the mount opening is cut 4-6mm smaller than your art on each edge so it holds the art securely in place.

How do I buy a frame that fits my print, including IKEA frames?

For a frame only, match the labels exactly - an A4 print needs an A4 frame, and a 30x40cm print needs a 30x40cm frame. For a frame with a mount, match your print size to the frame's stated opening size. If shopping for IKEA frames, note that UK prints are produced in centimetres to align with European IKEA sizing, so if you're outside the UK, double-check your local IKEA dimensions match the print sizes in inches, and it's best to secure your frame first since ranges change often.

How framers measure: two ways to tell us your size +

Important to know: in the framing world, the “size” of a frame always refers to the glass / internal opening — never the outer edge of the wood. That's why we can't build backwards from an overall frame size; it's dictated by your art size plus the width of the moulding you choose.

Method 1 — Art Only

Use this if your art goes straight into the frame with no card border, or you already own a mount and just need a frame to fit it.

What we need: the exact width & height of your art (or the outer edge of your existing mount).

We then tell you the overall frame size.
Always specify your units — we work in mm, cm and inches.

Method 2 — Mount / Mat Board

Use this if you'd like a decorative card border around your art.

What we need: the width & height of your artwork.

The mount opening is then cut 4–6mm smaller than your art on each edge, so it holds the art securely in place.

Buying your own frame & IKEA compatibility +

Frame only: simply match the labels — an A4 print needs an A4 frame; a 30×40cm print needs a 30×40cm frame.
