The Country House Welcome

Boot Room and Hallway Wall Art: Vintage Prints for a Proper Country Welcome

The hallway and boot room are the hardest-working spaces in a home. They're where muddy paws arrive, wellies get kicked off and guests get their very first impression. They're also the rooms most of us forget to decorate.

A few well-chosen pieces of vintage wall art change all of that. Classic horse paintings, sporting dogs, game birds and moody landscapes bring the warmth and character of an old country house, even in a new-build. Here's how to choose and hang art for the spaces you walk through every day.

Why Vintage Art Works So Well by the Front Door

Hallways and boot rooms are usually narrow, busy and full of practical things: coat hooks, benches, boot racks and dog beds. Art is what turns them from a corridor into a room.

  • It sets the tone for the whole house. Traditional prints in characterful frames tell guests straight away that this is a home with a story.
  • It suits the setting. Equestrian scenes, gun dogs and game birds have hung in English boot rooms and halls for generations, so they feel right at home next to tweed, waxed jackets and stone floors.
  • It's seen more than any other art you own. You pass it every time you come and go, so it's worth choosing pieces you love.
  • It lifts awkward spaces. A pair of prints above a bench or a single statement piece at the end of a corridor gives the eye somewhere to land.

Choosing Frames for a Hallway or Boot Room

The frame matters just as much as the print, especially in a space with lots of natural materials around it.

Brown, wood-tone and tortoiseshell-effect frames feel warm and understated next to oak benches, terracotta tiles and flagstones. Antique gold frames add a touch of grandeur to an entrance hall or a landing. Black frames look smart against pale walls and let a detailed sketch take centre stage.

Every Handmade Frame we sell is made to order on Dartmoor using solid wood mouldings from the UK and Italy, glazed with real glass, sealed on the back and sent out ready to hang. That makes them a practical choice for a busy space, as well as a beautiful one.

Horse & Equestrian Prints

Nothing says country house quite like a horse painting. Hang a single equestrian print above the boot bench, or line up a series along the hallway wall for an old-fashioned tack room feel.

Ducks, Geese & Game Birds

Vintage duck and game bird prints bring a gentle sporting heritage to a boot room or back hall. Pairs and sets of four look especially good hung in a neat grid above coat hooks.

Country Landscapes

A moody countryside landscape in a gold frame makes a beautiful focal point at the end of a hallway or above a console table, giving even a small entrance a real sense of depth.

Botanical Prints

Softer and lighter than sporting art, antique botanical prints are perfect for a bright hallway or a landing. A row of three up the staircase adds rhythm without crowding the space.

Five Tips for Hanging Art in a Hallway or Boot Room

  1. Hang at eye level. Aim for the centre of the artwork to sit roughly 145–150cm from the floor. In a hallway people are standing and walking, so this matters even more than in a living room.
  2. Mind the coats. Leave a clear gap above coat hooks and pegs so jackets and dog leads don't knock your frames.
  3. Work in pairs or rows. Narrow spaces suit symmetry. A matching pair either side of a mirror, or a row of three along a corridor, always looks considered.
  4. Mix in a statement piece. One larger landscape or horse painting at the end of a hall draws people in and makes the space feel longer.
  5. Choose glazed frames. Real glass protects your prints from muddy hands, wet noses and everyday knocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of art suits a boot room?

Traditional country subjects work best: horses, gun dogs, ducks and game birds, and countryside landscapes. Framed in wood, tortoiseshell-effect or antique gold, they feel at home alongside benches, boots and stone floors.

How high should I hang art in a hallway?

As a rule of thumb, hang pictures so the centre sits around 145–150cm from the floor. If you're hanging above a bench or console table, leave a gap of roughly 20–25cm between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Do your Handmade Frames arrive ready to hang?

Yes. Our framed art arrives ready to hang, glazed with real glass and sealed on the back. Empty frames are left unsealed so you can pop your own artwork inside.
