Sizing guide

Find the right frame for your print

Framing an unframed print yourself? Three quick steps to make sure it fits first time.

Buying a Simple Frame or Handmade Frame? It arrives framed and ready to hang, so you don’t need this guide. Have art at home that needs a frame? Shop empty frames.

Step 1

Check which units your print will be in

Unframed prints are printed close to you, in the UK, Europe, the US or Australia, so the units depend on where you live.

United KingdomPrinted in cm
EuropePrinted in cm
AustraliaPrinted in cm
United StatesPrinted in inches
Everywhere elsePrinted in cm

Inches and centimetres don’t convert exactly, so always buy your frame in the units for your country. For example, a 6 x 8 inch print ordered in the UK arrives as 15 x 20 cm, so it needs a 15 x 20 cm frame, not a 6 x 8 inch one.

Step 2

Find your size

6 x 8"15 x 20 cm
8 x 10"20 x 25 cm
11 x 14"28 x 35.5 cm
12 x 12"30 x 30 cm

18 x 24"45 x 60 cm
20 x 20"50 x 50 cm
20 x 28"50 x 70 cmIKEA
24 x 32"60 x 80 cm
24 x 36"60 x 90 cmIKEA

IKEA  marks sizes that usually fit an IKEA frame. Check current stock before you order.

Step 3

Choose the right frame

A frame without a mount

Buy a frame in exactly the same size as your print.

A4 print → A4 frame
30 x 40 cm print → 30 x 40 cm frame

A frame with a mount

Ignore the outer frame size. What matters is the opening in the mount (the card border), which should match your print.

A4 print → mount opening 21 x 29.7 cm
30 x 40 cm print → mount opening 30 x 40 cm
8 x 10" print → mount opening 8 x 10"

Find your frame first

Some sizes, especially A sizes and metric sizes, aren’t standard everywhere. Check the frame you want is available before you order your print.

Mark it out on the wall

Not sure which size to choose? Use masking tape or paper to mark the size on your wall. It’s the easiest way to judge the scale before you buy.

Framing with IKEA

The sizes marked IKEA in the chart above usually fit their frames. UK prints are made in cm to match European IKEA sizes.

IKEA stock changes

IKEA updates its ranges often, so buy your frames before ordering your prints in case a size is discontinued.
