Anyone who has been to a good framer knows the feeling. You stand at the counter, lay your picture down, and try corner samples against it one by one until something clicks. Then come the questions: how wide a mount, what colour, would a fine line in the mount suit it, plain glass or something better?

Our new Handmade Frame builder brings that whole experience to our website. You get all the choices a good framer would give you, from your sofa, with a true-to-life preview before you buy. Every frame you design is then made by hand, to order, here on Dartmoor.

Frame Any Print, or Your Own Art

Start from any print in our shop and the builder opens with it already in place. Or choose Frame your own art and enter your artwork's exact size in centimetres or inches. We make the frame to that exact size, up to a finished frame of 55 × 75 cm. Framing something of your own? Upload a photo of it to see exactly how it will look in your chosen frame (for preview only, it's not printed).

A beautiful choice of handmade mouldings. Choose from gilt, dark woods, painted finishes and more. Each moulding has close-up photos, and you can tap the frame in the preview to zoom right into the corner of your own design, just as you'd hold a corner sample up to the light.
A realistic preview, true to scale. The preview updates as you go: moulding, mount, colours, everything. It shows the finished size including the frame, so you'll know exactly how much wall it needs before you order.
Glass to suit the room. Choose standard glass, or AR70 Art Glass, which is almost invisible and cuts reflections. It's lovely for a picture opposite a window.
A live price. The price updates as you design, shown in your own currency, so there are no surprises.
Save, share and come back. Log in with just your email (no password needed) to save your frames, share a link to your design, or download a picture of it. The builder also remembers your last design for 30 days.

Mounts Made Your Way

A mount gives a picture room to breathe, and the builder lets you get it just right.

Choose your mount width. No mount, 2.5 cm, 5 cm, or set the mount width on each side yourself. A slightly deeper bottom gives the classic gallery look.
Pick your colour. There's a choice of mount colours, including linen.
Add a double or triple mount. Thin bands of a second or third colour sit inside the main mount, and you choose how much of each shows: 3, 5 or 10 mm. Your mount width stays the same.
Add a hand-cut V-groove. A fine line cut by hand into the mount: single, double or wide double. It's a traditional framer's detail you rarely find online.

New: Choose How Much of the Print Shows

Some prints look best shown in full; others look better with the mount brought in a little closer. Now you can choose:

Show the whole print. Every part of the picture on display.
Close to the picture. The mount comes in to about 3 cm round the picture, or neatly covers the plain edge around it.
Matching set size. One window size for every print in a set, so they hang together perfectly.

Your frame size and price stay the same; only the mount width changes. We've set this up print by print, so it always looks right.

Can I frame my own artwork or photo?

Yes. Choose Frame your own art, enter your art's size in centimetres or inches, and we'll make the frame to fit, up to a finished frame of 55 × 75 cm. You can upload a photo of your art to see it in your frame (for preview only, it's not printed).

What mount widths can I choose?

No mount, 2.5 cm or 5 cm, or set the mount width on each side yourself, for example with a deeper bottom for a gallery look.

What is a V-groove?

A V-groove is a fine line cut by hand into the mount, a little way in from the picture. It's a traditional framer's finishing touch, and you can choose a single, double or wide double groove.

What is AR70 Art Glass?

AR70 Art Glass is almost invisible glass that cuts reflections, so you see the picture rather than the room reflected in it. Standard glass is also available.

Is the preview true to size?

Yes. The preview is true to scale and shows the finished size including the frame, and it updates with every choice you make, including the price, which is shown in your own currency.

Will my frame look like my design?

Yes. A picture of your exact design goes to our workshop with your order, so what you designed is what we make. Every Handmade Frame is made by hand on Dartmoor from solid wood mouldings, glazed and finished by hand, and arrives ready to hang.

How long does a Handmade Frame take?

Every frame is made by hand to order on Dartmoor and usually ships in 7–10 working days. For the latest delivery information, see our Shipping & Returns page.

Can I save a design and come back to it?

Yes. Log in with just your email to save and share your designs, or download a picture of them. The builder also remembers your last design for 30 days.
