Classic Children's Rooms

Children's Bedroom Wall Art Ideas: Vintage Prints That Grow With Them

A child's bedroom changes faster than any other room in the house. The cot goes, the big bed arrives, and pictures that seemed perfect at two can look rather young by seven. With darker evenings and the Christmas holidays on the way, it's a natural time to give those walls some thought.

These children's bedroom wall art ideas take a different route from bright posters and cartoon characters: vintage prints, storybook illustrations and properly framed pictures that suit a child now and will still look right years from now. Here's what to choose, how to frame it and where to hang it.

Children's Bedroom Wall Art Ideas That Last

The pictures that stay the course have one thing in common: they were never trying to be fashionable. These are the kinds of vintage art we'd start with.

  • Gentle animals. Horses, ducks, swans and rabbits feel calm and friendly without being babyish, and they sit just as comfortably in a grown-up room later on.
  • Classic storybook illustrations. Babar and Peter Rabbit have been on bedroom walls for generations. A few well-chosen scenes will look better than a whole series.
  • Seaside scenes. Old coastal paintings and lighthouses have a sense of adventure about them, and they work especially well in blue or white rooms.
  • Landscapes and big skies. One soft country view can act almost like a window, which is a real help in a small box room or under the eaves.
  • Samplers. A printed reproduction of an old embroidery sampler brings in pattern and a homemade feel, and it looks lovely above a desk or chest of drawers.

Choosing Art for the Room You Actually Have

Start with the shape of the room. In a box room, one larger picture on the wall facing the door usually works better than lots of small ones, because it gives the eye somewhere to rest. Under sloping ceilings, use the tall wall at the end of the room or tuck a pair of small frames into an alcove. In a shared bedroom, give each side its own picture or two in matching frames, so the room feels fair and still hangs together.

Then think about colour. Vintage art tends to be soft and slightly faded, so it will sit happily with most paint colours. Pick out one shade from the print, perhaps the green of a landscape or the rust of a horse, and echo it in a cushion, a lampshade or a painted frame. If you're moving on from a baby's room, much of what's in our guide to vintage nursery decor carries over nicely.

Finally, frame things properly, because a good frame is what makes a print feel like part of the house rather than a child's poster. Our Handmade Frames are made to order on Dartmoor from solid wood mouldings from the UK and Italy, glazed with real glass and sealed on the back, and they arrive ready to hang.

Horses

Watercolour horses, old equestrian paintings and playful sketches are some of the most versatile pictures for a child's room. They feel traditional without being precious, and they look just as good in a teenager's bedroom.

Storybook Illustrations

Babar, Peter Rabbit and other much-loved book illustrations bring a bit of bedtime reading on to the walls. Hang two or three together, framed or unframed, for a small storybook corner.

Painted Frames

A hand-painted frame is a simple way to tie a picture to the room. Match it to the woodwork or a colour in the curtains, and let the print itself stay quiet and vintage.

How to Hang Pictures in a Child's Bedroom

  1. Hang them a little lower. In most rooms we'd put the centre of a picture around 145–150cm from the floor. In a child's room you can drop that slightly so it can be enjoyed from the bed, while keeping it out of easy reach.
  2. Keep clear of the bed. Framed pictures with real glass are best on a wall beside or facing the bed, rather than directly above a headboard or bunk.
  3. Use two fixings. Two hooks keep a frame straight and secure, which helps in a room where doors get slammed and balls get thrown.
  4. Mind the furniture. Leave 20–25cm between the bottom of a frame and a chest of drawers or desk, so the picture and furniture read as a pair.
  5. Plan small groups on the floor. Lay the frames out first and keep the gaps even. Our easy gallery wall guide has three simple layouts to copy.
  6. Leave room to add. Start with three or four pictures and leave some wall free, so the display can grow along with its owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wall art suits a child's bedroom?

Calm subjects that won't date are the safest choice: animals, storybook illustrations, landscapes and seaside scenes. They suit young children and still look right when a room becomes a teenager's.

How high should pictures be hung in a child's bedroom?

Slightly lower than the usual 145–150cm to the centre of the picture, so it can be seen from the bed or a chair. Keep any glazed frames high enough that they can't easily be reached or knocked.

Are glass picture frames safe in a child's bedroom?

Our Handmade Frames are glazed with real glass, so it's worth choosing their spot with care. Hang them securely on two fixings, away from the bed and out of reach of younger children. Unframed prints can always wait until a child is older.

What size of picture works best in a small bedroom?

One larger picture often makes a small room feel calmer than several tiny ones. If you prefer smaller frames, group them closely so they read as a single display.

Does vintage art work for both boys and girls?

Yes. Horses, ducks, landscapes and storybook scenes aren't aimed at anyone in particular, which makes them ideal for shared rooms and for bedrooms that need to last.

Can I frame my child's own drawings?

Yes. Our empty frames aren't sealed on the back, so you can add your own art and change it whenever you like.

How long will a framed print take to arrive?

Our products are handmade to order, and current times are kept up to date on our shipping and returns page.
