The Traditional Bathroom

Bathroom Wall Art Ideas: Vintage Prints for a Traditional Bathroom

The bathroom is often the last room in the house to get any art on the walls, yet it's the one every guest will see. With Christmas visitors not far off, now is a lovely time to give the bathroom or downstairs cloakroom a little more character.

These bathroom wall art ideas lean on the things that have always looked at home near water: antique fish and crab studies, our new seashell, coral and sea sponge prints, and characterful handmade frames. It's the look of an old country house bathroom, with panelling, patterned wallpaper and a roll-top bath. Here's how to choose the art, frame it and hang it so it lasts.

New In: Antique Shells, Corals and Sea Sponges

We've just added three new collections of antique marine studies, made with bathrooms and cloakrooms in mind. They're available as unframed prints, printed on museum-quality matt paper with archival inks, and designed to be collected in pairs or matching sets.

  • Coral studies. Soft pinks, golds and lilacs in our coral studies set, or warm browns in the sepia corals and sea fans, which suit a more muted scheme.
  • Seashells. Thirty antique shell studies: whelks, cowries, conches and cockles. Choose a pair for either side of a mirror, or build a whole wall.
  • Sea sponges. Six sculptural sea sponge studies in sandy golds and deep browns, lovely against pale panelling.
  • Made for matching. Each collection shares the same soft, pressed-edge style, so any combination hangs together as a set.

For a bathroom, we'd always put them behind glass. Our empty Handmade Frames are made to order and left unsealed so you can fit your new prints yourself.

Bathroom Wall Art Ideas to Shop

Antique fish and crab studies are the classic bathroom choice, and our newest come with a pretty blue lattice border. Shells, corals and sponges bring the same natural history feel with softer shapes, and vintage ducks add a gentle country house note. Here are our favourites for a traditional bathroom or cloakroom, or browse everything in our bathroom wall art collection.

Choosing Frames and Hanging Art in a Bathroom

Frames matter more here than almost anywhere else in the house. Gold bamboo frames have a light, slightly Regency look that suits fish and shell prints; tortoiseshell-effect and wood-tone frames sit well with dark wood, brass and wallpaper; and hand-painted frames can pick up a colour from your tiles or panelling. Every Handmade Frame we sell is made to order on Dartmoor from solid wood mouldings from the UK and Italy, glazed with real glass and sealed on the back, which helps protect the print from everyday humidity.

  1. Keep clear of splashes. Hang pictures away from the shower and taps, and avoid the wall directly above the bath, where steam collects most. Beside a window, above a towel rail or opposite the basin are all good spots.
  2. Mind the eye level. On a free wall, aim for the centre of the artwork to sit around 145–150cm from the floor. Above a cabinet or towel rail, leave roughly 20–25cm between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
  3. Hang in pairs or sets. Small bathroom walls suit a pair hung one above the other, or a grid of four or nine matching prints, which is exactly what our shell, coral and sponge sets are made for. Keep the gaps between frames even, about 5–8cm. Our easy gallery wall guide has more layouts.
  4. Use the space above the loo. In a cloakroom, the wall above the cistern is often the only free spot, and a pair of small framed prints there makes the whole room feel finished.
  5. Let the room breathe. Open a window or run the extractor fan after a bath or shower. Good ventilation is the best way to look after any framed art in a bathroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of wall art is best for a bathroom?

Framed prints behind glass are the best choice. Antique fish and crab studies, seashells, corals, sea sponges and vintage ducks all suit a traditional bathroom, and their soft colours sit well against tiles, panelling and wallpaper.

Can you hang framed pictures in a bathroom?

Yes, as long as the room is reasonably well ventilated and the pictures are kept away from direct splashes and steam. Our Handmade Frames are glazed with real glass and sealed on the back, which helps protect the print from everyday humidity.

Where should I hang art in a small bathroom or cloakroom?

The wall above the loo, beside the window, above a towel rail or opposite the basin all work well. A pair of small pictures hung one above the other is perfect for a narrow wall.

How many pictures should I hang in a bathroom?

A pair is often enough for a small bathroom or cloakroom. If you have one larger wall, a grid of four or nine matching prints, such as our shell or coral studies, makes a real statement without feeling cluttered.

Can I put unframed prints in a bathroom?

We'd always recommend framing art for a bathroom. Our unframed prints are printed on museum-quality matt paper with archival inks, and a glazed frame keeps them protected from moisture and splashes. Our empty Handmade Frames are a simple way to do it.

Do your Handmade Frames arrive ready to hang?

Yes. Our framed art is handmade to order, glazed with real glass, sealed on the back and arrives ready to hang. Empty frames are left unsealed so you can put your own artwork inside.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Everything is handmade to order, so you'll find the latest making and delivery information on our Shipping & Returns page. If you have any questions, just tap the Chat button.
